In March, the Second Workshop on Human Capacity Building to Monitor Nutritious and Fortified Foods in the East, Central, and Southern Africa (ECSA) Region was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. PHC was proud to have both the Malawi and the Zimbabwe programs featured in the meeting.

Ms. Flora Dimba of Malawi’s Ministry of Health presented on “Use of the Fortification Monitoring Tool in Malawi” and Mr. Samende Kumbirai of Zimbabwe’s Government Analysis Lab presented on “Zimbabwe’s Health Information System: Integrating Fortification Data”. Both presentations featured the use of the PHC Monitoring Tool and its indicators as a means of effectively tracking fortification compliance information. PHC is eager to work with partners over the next several months to improve the functionality of this monitoring tool so that it can be scaled and disseminated for wider use by additional programs.

The workshop was a USAID-funded activity, implemented by GAIN in partnership with the ECSA Health Community and PACA (Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa).

PHC Featured as April Altruist Non-Profit!

We are pleased to announce that the crowd-sourcing philanthropy site, Altruist, has featured PHC as its charity for April!

“Providing food for the hungry has been a cornerstone of charitable giving for hundreds of years. But while food donation can cure hunger, the growing problem of malnutrition is much more complicated. One in eight people around the world are undernourished and three million children die every year from malnutrition…Food fortification is a highly-effective way to add these nutrients to a food supply.” Altruist goes onto state that “Project Healthy Children not only fortifies foods, but a key component of their work is establishing programs that are self-sustaining — countrywide, market-based, mandatory programs that are run by governments and industry — allowing them to celebrate the day they leave a country, not the day they arrive. Read on to learn more about PHC and Altruist’s work”.

We are grateful to Altruist for this honor!
