To celebrate World Flour Day, we asked the Sanku team to tell us about their Flour Heros. Kelvin, Region Manager, introduced us to Dr David Kihwele of Afya Mill.
As a doctor, Dr Kihwele treated hundreds of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Many arrived too late for treatment. When he retired, he decided to dedicate himself to preventing malnutrition so he set up a mill, and joined Sanku’s network of millers. Now he teaches his customers about the benefits of fortification and brings fortified flour to local families if he hears they have a child suffering from malnutrition.
His motto “ugali [traditional porridge] made without fortified flour is nothing”. Maize flour from Afya Mill always contains added iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, and zinc – micronutrients proven to reduce maternal and infant mortality, prevent stunting, and boost productivity.
