With the start of the New Year came another monumental step in the fortification program in Malawi. The new standards, drafted to set the level of vitamins and minerals in fortified foods based on up-to-date consumption and deficiency data, were approved by Malawi’s Minister of Industry and Trade. This approval of the standards means they are now enforceable by Malawi Bureau of Standards, sending the signal to all of the relevant industries to get ready to fortify. The final step now is for Malawi’s Ministry of Justice to publish the Government Gazette in which the fortification standards will be officially made public and mandated. Malawi is well on its way to a fully mandated fortification program.
